When did this man die and who killed him?

  • Dunking is the morning baker at the newton bake shoppe. He usually arrives at the shop at 3:00 am to begin the days baking. when he arrived last tues however he was met with a horrible suprise. As he opened the walk in refrigerator to pull out the ingredients he discovered a body. According to the statement he immediately called the police who arrived with the coroner at 3:30 am. The police report noted the following facts: The body was identified as that of the bake shops owner Mr Chris P Kreem. When the coroner arrived he immediately measured the temp of the body as 57 degree F. At 4:30 he measured the temp again at 52.5 degree F. The temp of the walk in refrigerator is a constant 37 degree F. The body showed a severe head injury but no signs of being moved. The night baker Krueller closed up the previous evening at 7:00pm. Witnessed verified he arrived at home at 8:00 and remained home all evening. The cleaning staff cleaned the bakery between 1 and 2 am. They do not enter the refrig or freezer which are left locked by the night baker. Neither the day or night baker nor the cleaning staff noted anything unusual. The owners wife,Boston Kreem, said that on the previous evening she and her husband enjoyed a movie and a midnight snack before retiring to separate bedrooms. Mrs Kreem claims that Mr.Kreem had planned to leave home at 2:30am to open up shop with the day baker. The day baker Dunkins wife claims that he was home since 5 pm the previousday until he left for work at 2:30 am on tuesday. Who killed Chris P Kreem?

    The night baker killed Chris P Kreem. I solved this by subtracting the temperature of our bodies (98.6) with the temperature found at 3:30 A.M (57). The number was 41.6 degrees. Then, I subtracted 57 - 52.5 = 4.5. After that, I divided 41.6 by 4.5, because 4.5 is the amount of temperature decrease per hour. I got around 9, so that's 9 hours. If you think about it, 9 hours before 3:30 A.M is around 6:30 P.M, and I'm pretty sure that the night baker was working around that time. The night baker killed Chris P Kreem at 6:30, then went home at 7.

I think Mrs. Kreem killed him, because she claimed they had a midnight snack. This would mean Kreem the owner had a body temperature of about 98 F. even if he was killed in the fridge at 12:00 his body would only have had 3.5 hours to cool about 98-57= 41 degrees. after the police arrived, it was recorded that the body was cooling at a rate of 57-52.5=4.5 degrees per hour at maximum. 41/3.5= about 11.7 degrees per hour. The numbers aren't even close. Why would Mrs. Kreem want to lie? She must be the culprit.

It's a cute little murder mystery that may hinge on determining the cooling effect that a 37 degree refrigerator has on the dead body. http://www.springerlink.com/content/r774870h5q841222/ What does not make sense in this story is how Dunkins, the day baker, leaves for work at 2:30 AM (arriving at the bakery at 3 AM) , yet only arrives home at 5 PM! Where was he all afternoon? When does he sleep? Meanwhile, the night baker, Krueller, closes up shop at 7 PM? effbee: I'm impressed!
