How many 4-point problems are there?

How many problems did the boy get correct?

  • In order to encourage his son to study arithmetic, a father agrees to pay his boy 80 pence for every problem correctly solved and to fine him 50 pence for each incorrect solution. After 26 problems had been attempted they noticed neither owed any money to the other. How many did the lad get correct and how many did he get wrong?

  • Answer:

the total no. of problems solved is 26 Let the no. of correctly solved questions be x thus 80*x - 50* (26-x) =0 or 130x =1300 x= 10 Thus he got 10 problems right and 16 wrong.

Other answers

You have two variables and two equations here: a=problems correct b=problems wrong a+b = 26 80a+(-50)b = 0 Solve the first equation for one of the variables and then plug that value into the other equation: a = 26-b so 80(26-b) - 50b = 0 solve this to get a value for b explicitly, then plug that value into the 1st equation and solve for a.

he had 5 correct and 8 wrong, oops! neglected to see that there were 26 problems, so just double that amount 10 correct and 16 incorrect! sorry about that
