What are the rules for adding and subtracting negative numbers? Easy 10 Points!?

  • Answer:

If it is a negative plus a negaitve you add them togeather and it is a negative. If it is negative plus a posative you subtract them and which ever number is bigger that is the sign. like if it is -3+2 it would be a negative 1 cause you subtracted them then took the biggest number sign which was three so it is a negative. an subtract well that is hard to explan. you change the subtract to a + and you and if they are both negatives like if it is -4- -5 you would change it to -4+5 cause you turn the second number into a posative. and if it is a negative minus a positive you turn the minus sign to add and make the posative a negative like...-6- 7 you changes to add sign the 7 becomes negative so you get -13.i know that probaly sounds so confussing but that is the best way i can put it. good luck!:)

Adding together two negative numbers is the same as adding two positive numbers, but the result is negative. For example, -6 + -3 = -9 Subtracting a negative number is the same as adding a positive number. So for example, -6 - (-2) = -6 + 2 = -4. Sometimes it helps to think about or look at the real number line. Adding a negative or subtracting a positive makes to "travel" to the left on the real number line, while subtracting a negative or adding a positive makes you go to the right.

just remember when you subtract negative numbers they stay negative but it is like regular addition mainly since they are same kind you add like -1-1=-2 when you add negative numbers first look at bigger number then subtract with other number like in this example -1+2= 1 in this +2 is biggest so 2-1=1

Think of negative numbers as owing money, pouns or pence: eg -5+7 You owe 5 but you have 7, then you'll have 2 remaining. 5-7, you have 5 but you owe seven, you'll still owe 2, so it becomes negative -2 -5-7, you owe five and you owe seven, so you owe 12 in total, that'll be -12
