How many medium sized candles can i make with 20kg of paraffin wax?

    Well, that depends on what constitutes a 'medium' sized candle. If each candle contained 100g of paraffin, that's 200 candles. If you are out 40, your material cost is 20 p per candle. Considering it will take you ~4 hrs labor (probably more) at 14/hr (low end for entrepreneur), labor cost is 28 p per candle. So if you want a 10% profit, you should charge at least 55 p per 100g candle. This is for wholesale, if you are selling them individually by yourself, figure out how long it will take. A good markup from wholesale to retail is usually ~40%, or final price of approx. one pound per candle.

You can make 1,000 candles weighing 20g each, which is a medium-size candle. If you sell them for 4 pence each, you will break even. If you sell them for more than 4 pence each, you will make a profit. That assumes there are no other costs. I imagine you have some sort of wick for the candles and that your stove uses gas, electricity or some other power source that is not free. If that's true, you need to add in those costs.

40 pounds?!? Wow, that's a lot... If the candles are about 5 inches tall, they should weigh about 10 grams... You could sell them at at LEAST 4 pence a candle to get your money back...
