What do you think about a math book with only examples ?
-
I have been teaching math for about 4 years. Some of the math solution manuals I have encountered are not detailed enough and also don't explain well sometimes. Students have also informed me that the textbooks do not have enough examples and lack detail. As a result over the past couple semesters I have been debating whether or not to create several math books just containing worked out examples for a particular math topic, eg. Algebra. I have already heard from my students that this is a good idea and would definitely purchase such a book. I would like to hear from some of you and what you think of this idea of creating these example math books. I know there are some books out there such that Schaum's outlines, but their books don't show enough examples and sometimes they have mistakes. The book will provide students with detailed examples at different degrees of difficulty. For a sample see below: http://www.scs.gmu.edu/~mwester1/completing-the-square.pdf

As a student who often needs examples and hates math because of the fact I cannot get down the steps most of the time... I think it's a very good idea.

I just completed my college math course and the book we had was HORRIBLE. It provided examples, but they were nothing like the actual homework the book provided. I think a good math book should have detailed, step by step examples that are at least as complicated as the homework. I'm a very visual person as well, I need EVERY STEP shown. My book was bad about assuming you knew what the next step was and actually skipping a step or two in the examples.

See where you are coming from but I found the example a bit confusing. Teaching from first principles is important so you know why you are doing something not just going through the mechanics of getting the answer right via one particular method. For example solving quadratics can be done two ways and you need to know when substitution or elimination is the right method, particularly when getting on to solving differential equations. I've seen some poor souls using substitution on differentials for half an hour when I've solved the problem in a matter of a few minutes using elimination.

I'm a struggling math student. I seem to always forget the steps for solving different problems. I think this is a wonderful idea and would defiantly purchase it!

Practically speaking, theories & theorems most of the time, dont explain the applicability of the matter. Its 'cos researchers and mathematicians who are and were experts in their own might created these and that was a result of applications... think about how far deep their computational skills wud have been! And teaching it to a student is a different matter who often do not understand the use(applicability) of it in the first case. Examples are the most efficient way to make students understand their applications to real life situations. Also it makes maths an interesting subject to study... examples can make understanding of theorems well, and exercises based on real-life examples can make them understand where and when to apply!

Brilliant. I was homeschooled throughout grade school, and both of my parents had high level degrees in Psychology, so I was on my own from Algebra on out. Even though I'm relatively good with math (I'm now a Computer Science major), I'd often get frustrated when confronted with a new idea or method, because I'd have no one to explain my errors, or break the problem down in detail for every situation I might encounter. For that reason, I think your book would work wonders for kids who are trying to learn on their own. My one piece of advice would be to insert references to earlier lessons when you don't work a step out completely (i.e. step 7, factoring, in your example). Sometimes it helps to see everything put together, and it's easy for young students to get lost or lose interest when working through a large text-book.

Yes, it is a great idea and can only help your students. I wish I had had something like this when I started into algebra. This coming from someone who has severe math anxiety due to a very poor textbook (S.M.S.G.) and an elderly teacher who did not know how to further explain the solution steps----40 years ago!! You mention that your students would be willing to purchase your book. Whether you are publishing through a publishing house or privately publishing the book you may need to clear the idea through the school board as it may be looked upon as a "conflict of interest". Just a heads up!!
