Does Mathematica use first-order or second-order unification?

Mathematica costs too much! What's good to use instead, free or cheap?

  • Last time I looked, Mathematica has the BEST functions. There's an open-source algebra project in progress, have y'all tried it? Can Maple be got for free? What would I have to do to get an honest copy of Mathematica even though I'm not OFFICIALLY an Academic (I probably should be, considering I'm absentminded, and impractical...)

  • Answer:

Neither Maple nor Mathematica is free. However there are free computer algebra systems, for example: maxima, see http://maxima.sourceforge.net/ and sage, see http://www.sagemath.org/ and PARI/GP, see http://pari.math.u-bordeaux.fr/
