How does NASA hire civil engineers?

Does NASA only hire people from the army as astronauts?

When i check the bios from a nasa website most of the astronauts were from the army or air force. if i can get engineering degrees with out going to the air force or army, are the chances good that i can become an astronaut (non pilot)?

    No. Anybody can apply, as long as they are a U.S. citizen. When NASA first started they only hired military test pilots. Even now, a lot of the skills they need are most readily available in the military.

Hi. To COMMAND a space mission requires quite a bit of piloting skill. To become a mission specialist does not (usually) require even a pilots license. Many are called, few are chosen.

Terrig, Many astronauts are from the Navy, and a couple were Marines. However, a few have not been in the military. The issue you're fighting by not being a military pilot is the experience military pilots have as test pilots (which many were). When I was growing up we had astronauts come to our home a few times, and I was able to speak to them. The training and experience they received as military pilots, and especially as test pilots was what NASA looked for. "Ranger"

Actually, when George Abby was at the helm at the Johnson Space Center, he favored flying Navy astronauts over Air Force and Army astronauts. Also, may astronauts are not in the military, and are civilians You could get a degree in engineering and become a mission specialist (non pilot) type of astronaut. The MS does not pilot spacecraft but gets to do EVAs.
