Why do some people complain about the amount of money spent on the LHC ? ?
-
They say that the money could be better spent on starving children or on a cure for cancer. However, the money spent is only a fraction of the amount spent on the Olympic Games. Do these people recognize that the purpose of science is not only to fix problems, but to garner new knowledge of the world around us. The question "How did we get here," is one of biggest questions in human history. There is so much we still don't know about the universe, why should we refrain from being less ignorant about it ? To paraphrase Stephen Hawkings : We are just an advanced breed of apes who inhabit a minor planet of a very average star, but we can understand the universe, and that makes us very special.

Answer:
Finally, someone who actually understands this. Comparing the LHC to starving children and cancer is like comparing apples and oranges. And the LHC is an international effort. All the US really did was make the magnets. Much more money is directed towards poverty than the US directed towards those magnets. If we just keep shoving science aside (like so many people want) we would go no where. But these same people are also saying we need to colonize on Mars. They want the fun stuff, but don't know the work in between. They also don't know that the LHC has nothing to do with what they're talking about. "Do these people recognize that the purpose of science is not only to fix problems, but to garner new knowledge of the world around us." My sentiments exactly. They have no idea what science is all about. They want a perfect world before we do anything else. Well guess what? There never has been, nor ever will be a perfect world. As for "how was our universe created", they just say "well we don't need to know... IT WAS GOD!" The fundies are already doing that. But they can complain all they want- the LHC is a go once they get some parts fixed, which will delay it 2 months. But after that prepare for some major scientific advancements in the field of physics.

I agree with you. if it wernt for the money spent on science, then where would we be right now. and that fact that people even complain about the money spent makes me mad. these people are ignorant and do not quite get the fact that, no matter what happens in this experiment, it will provide evidence to whether we were, or were not created by the big bang, and....considering we dont really know what is to happen, we may even discover something even more than we are looking for, maybe even light speed travel.....cheers mate

People complain because they feel that every dollar not spent on feeding people is a waste. If mankind didn't invest time, money, and effort to advance our knowledge, we would still be living in caves, and the aliens would be able to kill us like <snaps fingers> that.

bcuz they don't have a clue what they are talking about. bcuz they don't understand scince. sure, you could feed the starving children for a while for what the lhc cost. then you would run out of money, and they would still be starving. and there would be more of them.

I don't agree with you. I do agree with you that it is important to spend money on fundamental research, but LHC is not necessarily the best place. Humankind always had the habit to spend most money on the physical sciences, rather than on fundamental biology, meteorology, ocean sciences, medicine, etc.

Because they do not know the real meaning of science. They just think that we are doing it for the sake of it and the money should be used on other things. The ISS is up there to study new methods of making new medications etc...

Money spent on LHC was small change compare to the latest plan to help the banks in USA LHC = 3 to 6 Billion Euros Banks plan = 700 Billion US Dollars I feel money was spent better with LHC than the banks

The money spent on LHC and the Olympics could have been better spent on starving kids. The Olympics are not more important and neither is LHC compared to human life lost that could have been avoided by diverting money that could have been used to save lives.
