    By fusion, by taking apart and joining the nuclei of light elements into heavier ones, on the sun mostly hydrogen to helium. Part of the mass is lost as energy, as light and heat. Other stars burn the same or other gases -- find the bright red star Betelgeuse at Orion's shoulder. That red giant "sun" is fusing helium into still heavier elements, such as carbon and oxygen. Helium was discovered on the Sun (as spectrograph lines) before it was found on Earth.

it is essentially a giant nuclear explosion , only it burns very long. it shines because the process in which it makes heat energy also makes light energy. fusion/ fission

Energy cannot be created or destroyed but can be converted to some other form of energy.The sun has to do some work and hence converting some other energy into light energy.
