Has anyone here experienced an earthquake?

Does anyone hear weird grumblings in the sky that aren't airplanes or jets?

  • Sometimes I will hear this grumbling sound that sounds like its get closer but not. (if that makes sense) Its the sound of an earthquake but no shaking. Just wanted to find out if anyone else has experienced the same. :)

    A locomotive in the distance can make this exact sort of noise. It can seem to come from all over the sky - because it is not a particularly directional sound - it can seem to come from all over - because the sound is very throbbing - closer to a thudding rumble.

You mean when there aren't any visible? Yes. Given that passenger jets cruise at around .8 mach, and military aircraft can be faster yet, it's a fairly normal thing to hear a jet, and look up, and for it to already be gone from the area of sky where it sounds like it's coming from. Then there are weather-related and surface phenomena which can produce similar sounds.

Approaching tornadoes and old fashioned steam engine locomotives can make very similar sounds. Most locomotives are diesel (kerosene) fueled now. I personally don't think they make similar sounds, (yes, I was less then 5 miles from a tornado about 10 months ago) but maybe I just wasn't close enough to the tornadoes that were relatively close by in the last not quite two years. I've live smack in the middle of Tornado Alley most of the time for 31 years and counting. Tornadoes don't freak me out, and neither do hurricanes, because I grew up mostly in New Orleans. EARTH QUAKES stronger than Richter 5.7 MIGHT freak me out a little bit, but I think tornadoes and hurricanes and earthquakes are exciting and fascinating, even while they are happening.
