Where can I watch the Manila 10's in Hong Kong?

Where to watch the Geminids 2006 in Hong Kong?

  • I live in Hong Kong and would love to watch this year's Geminids meteor shower in December. Does anyone know where the best place to view it from, which direction to face, and what time the peak would be locally? Many Thanks!

  • Answer:

The best view of the night sky in HK is on the beach around on the south side of Victoria Island. you can get out on the points and you are as ffar away from the bright lights as you can get. If you are stuck in Kowloon/MongKok and can't get out of that area, the best bet is to get on the roof of a tall building. If you live in an apartment, ask your building supervisor if arrangements can be made to get up on the roof for a special occasion. There is an astronomy club at HK University. Call the physics department. They may have a viewing spot set up, or may be able to give you better advice than I can. "Every person has two cities: his own and HongKong." --HAZ

Any meteor shower is best seen from a dark area with a clear sky and little or no Moon up. Best time of night is after midnight. Geminids may appear almost anywhere in the sky, especially at your latitude, so pick a direction where you have a clear view and look up. Expect about 20-25 per hour, plus 5-8 meteors per hour not associated with the Geminids.
