What time can I see the meteor shower tonight?

What time can I see the meteor shower this morning (Sat Oct 24)?

  • I live in Melbourne, Australia and I'm wondering at what time can I see the meteor shower (which will occur near the constellation of Orion) this morning.

  • Answer:

The peak already happened early Wednesday morning but there should still be residual Orionid Meteors for a few days after wards. They will not be as frequent as they were at the peak of the shower, but they will still be visible. They are called Orionids because they seem to originate from the constellation, Orion. The earth is passing through the dust trail left from Halley's Comet's orbit years ago. The dust particles enter the atmosphere of the earth at very high rates of speed and heat up to glowing hot due to friction with the earth's atmosphere. They are called meteors while they are streaking through the atmosphere. The become meteorites if and when they reach the surface of the earth. If you can hold it in your hand it is a meteorite. This is the link to the International Meteor Organization 2009 calendar. It will give you dates of all 2009 Meteor showers for 2009 http://www.imo.net/calendar/2009 And for 2010 (when they finish compiling and building it): http://www.imo.net/calendar/2010 The home page of IMO tells you how to get the very most out of your meteor shower viewing experience.
