How fast will can we transition from a type I society to a type III?

  • http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kardashev_scale right now, we're a type zero society. soon (around 2060) we are predicted to become a type 1 society. able to harness the amount of energy a planet can offer. it seems one of the major contributing factors to that jump will be the accelerated exponential growth of computational power, suggested by moore's law. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moore's_law in this chart, it shows the tech intel, jumping off the scale. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/5/5f/Kscaleprojections.png if we become a type one, and harness the energy of a planet, we should be able to convert this energy into matter, and begin building megastructures (ships larger than 1000 km) which would give us the platform to step to the next level. a type II, harnessing the power of a star, and possibly building structures around the star to do so (and converting that energy into matter) building again a new step, to type three, where we contorl the power of a galaxy. so, my main question is, is it safe to say, once we have the computer intellect to break away from type 0, wouldn't stepping to the other levels only be depdent on the time it takes to convert this energy and build the need structures? could we actually jump from type 0 to type III in a matter of a less than a hundered years compared to the millions it took to get to type 1, with the help of the intelligence created by AI. should we join this AI. wouldn't that be the easiest way to ensure our survival against such a universe changing power.

  • Answer:

Going from a type 1 to a type 3 will take way longer than a hundred years. The power of all the stars in the galaxy, what kind of civilization will need such power?Anyway it will take way longer just to get to the stars. We are quite close to a type 1 civilization as we already started getting wind, geothermal and other sources of energy produced by the earth.Im sure we will have achieved type 1 before the year 2100. To get to the type 2 will take a few thousand years. You see with reaching level 2 we are still dependent on our planet for the resources and food. And to make those energy harvesters around the star will take huge amounts of materials. We will have to start mining the other planets and asteroids and moons. To reach type 3 will take a million years or more.We only do that with some means of inter stellar travel. But can you imagine a civilization like that,I still can figure out how we might need such power.Just a few hundred stars should be able to support it. We will certainly have AI smarter than us before type 2 and we might send them to do our dirty work. And mutating us into something faster smarter and stronger will be a real help.Merging us into a computer might be a little weird but it might help in ways we can't even think off.

I could have sworn that theoretical physicist Michio Kaku made an improvement on the Kardashev scale by adding a type IIII civilization, taking into account that time travel is hypothetically possible so a type IIII civilization would be able to use time travel, as for how long it would take man kind to reach these levels is impossible to say for sure.

This is a very interesting an exotic question. I haven't heard of this scale before. I am in the pessimist camp when it comes to stuff like this though. Even with the greatest technology in liberating energy, the distances of the Universe appear too great to traverse; I don't think we'll ever venture out of the Solar system.

We will transition from type I to type III in the amount of time required for type II. ;oD With any luck, we will continue to evolve into forms more adaptive to the universal environment.

>could we actually jump from type 0 to type III in a matter of a less than a hundered years According to known physics, it would take at least 80000 years to reach the farthest portions of the Milky Way, even if you could travel very close to the speed of light. Unless we can find a way around that limit, 80000 years pretty much sets a lower bound on the timespan required to make the transition to a type III civilization. >should we join this AI. wouldn't that be the easiest way to ensure our survival against such a universe changing power. Yes. And whether we should or not, we almost certainly will. I think by this point in our technological history we can fairly safely say that we will soon either make ourselves extinct or become posthuman, and probably the latter.

Great question...simple answer: you don't need computers to make a great transition from first stage (or zero level) of race development to the top level (level 3). Computers get in the way actually, when it comes to understanding 'intuitive' physics. Computers are tools, but the human brain/mind is much much more. Computer help us visualize, but the brain is superior in every way. To get to a Type III race would require Genetic intervention on our part. That would be simply 'evolution' or evolving the genome forward quickly. For increasing the genome capacity would increase brain power, and all other functions and capability. You don't need external tools then at all, you don't need computers or A.I., you can perform much greater tasks due to evolution. ...and if you can believe it, there was once a Type III civilization present on earth a very long time ago.....but I'll leave that up to all of you to believe or not.

First of all, I don't think our tech level is "jumping off the scale". The movie "2001" predicted we would be far ahead of where we are now for good reason: just 50 years earlier we had invented the airplane, and were already going into space. But now 50 years after that, we're not much farther along at all in terms of space travel. Maybe we're even a little bit behind where we were. Neverthelses, the farthest portions of the galaxy being 70,000 light years away, it would probably take no sooner than 70,000 years (I don't believe it is possible to break the speed of light). Most likely it will take at least a few million years. We will probably have to evolve into something else by that time, so that a million years might not seem so long. ================ Actually, evolving into something else doesn't exclude merging with computers to some degree. That was what the aliens in "2001" did (going back to that), and eventually evolving into beings that used the fabric of space-time itself as their physical makeup. I don't know if that's type III but it's a ways beyond us.
