If at all possible, I might suggest you reconsider getting a motor-driven telescope. They can be *very* fiddly, require a power source not always handy in a field or away from the house, and because of the extra expense, mean you end up spending most of your money on a computer, a motor and a tripod... and only a very little bit on the telescope (OTA) itself - which means you end up with a small aperture - and a rather disappointing experience. You might consider getting a (reflector) telescope that *tells* you where to -push- it to see the object(s) you are interested in. Orion sells the 'Intelliscope' line of (dobsonian mounted) telescopes - which have a computer that can determine where your telescope is pointed (after being set up), and direct you for how to push-to the next object you are interested in. You end up spending about $150 or so on the computer, perhaps $50 for the 'mount' and the rest is the OTA (telescope). Dunno what your budget is, but for around $600, you can get an 8'' Intelliscope. http://www.telescope.com/Telescopes/Dobsonian-Telescopes/IntelliScope-Dobsonians/Orion-SkyQuest-XT8i-Computerized-IntelliScope-Telescope/pc/1/c/12/sc/27/p/27183.uts or for about $500, you can get a 5'' 'go-to reflector' - (roughly 1/2 the light-gathering capacity...) http://www.telescope.com/Telescopes/Reflector-Telescopes/Reflector-Telescopes-with-GoTo-Mounts/Orion-StarSeeker-130-GoTo-Reflector-Telescope-amp-SkyLine-Kit/pc/1/c/11/sc/343/p/27164.uts#

I would recommend visiting Orion Telescopes. They have good choices and lots of information about GOTO telescopes. You can even call them (or email them) for advice. http://www.telescope.com/catalog/search.cmd?form_state=searchForm&keyword=goto

Don't get yourself in overdrive about this. There is a lot of junk out there on the market. There are considerations to be made first. Where do you intend to use this scope? Is there a lot of light pollution there? Will you need to drive somewhere? The best scope is the one you will actually use. If it is hard to set up and awkward to use you will be discouraged. Have you ever looked through a telescope? You may be surprised that the image looks for the most part nothing like pictures in magazines and online. My best advise is ti find an astronomy club in your area and go to one of their public star party type events. Have a look see and ask a lot of questions. Those go to scopes are not as easy as some of the ads would have you believe. Here are some basics. The most important thing is a very solid mount. Nothing worse that a scope that shakes and won't stay pointed where you want it. The second is quality of optics. This has nothing to do with magnification. Any scope sold to you based on how much it magnifies is a waste of money.Optics are more about how well the scope can resolve an image. better resolution means better detail even at low magnification. Personally for starters I thing a good quality pair of astronomical binoculars with a high end tripod and binocular mount can be the best bang for the buck. Even so this can set you back $300-$500 dollars. So start googleing astronomy clubs and get involved. Remember you want something that encourages you toward the hobby not discourages you away from it. If you have other questions message me through Y/A
