Do you know how to center the object?

From a picture I had taken, what could the object to the right side of the picture have been? Details...?

  • Here is a link to a blog site where I posted the image: http://starmanslogncc1852.blogspot.com/ The time was between 4:30 and 5:00 PM CDT, October 10, 2010, location 42.7210°N, 94.2150°W (Humboldt, Iowa). I was facing due east at the time and the altitude would have been somewhere between 50 to 75 degrees above the eastern horizon. I was taking some pictures of the radio relay tower (in picture) and this object was off to one side. At the time that I took the picture I just aimed and shot the picture, but the LCD display was wash-out a bit due to the sunlight levels of this late Sunday afternoon. I only saw this image after I downloaded it to my computer. Other pictures of the radio tower do not show the object. I ruled out both daytime sightings of Jupiter and Venus as the position would have been wrong for that time of the day. When I zoomed in on the object with my computer photo viewer, the object shows to be quite bright in the very center. My own best guess would be a probable Iridium Satellite flare; I know they are sometimes visible in the daytime. I am just curious of what else it could have been. It was just a chance point and click shot with the camera and did not review any of the 50-some photos I took that afternoon until I got home.

  • Answer:

Pretty interesting. I think you would be close as it being an iridium flare. Some might say it could be a weather balloon, but I would not be as certain with that.
