How can Thor be in the movie "Avengers"?

I mean there is a continuity considering the characters right?Captain America,Ironman,The Black Widow and Hulk were all seen before in the Marvel films and "The Avengers" is just another adventure for them.With Thor it is different.In the movie "Thor" the portal to Thor's planet was closed and he could return to Earth.Jane was trying to find a way to open the portal when the movie ended.So how is it that he magically appears in the Avengers??Do we know anything about it or this is gonna be ignored completely??

Good question. If you watch the movie Thor past the credits we found that Loki is back on earth. He then says that there are other ways to get around than the bifrost. So, because The Avengers trailer shows Thor on earth he found one of those portals. We just don't know the exact details. We'll just have to watch The Avengers to find out.
