How to become a documentary filmmaker?

If you were a Filmmaker, would you rather make a movie that would become a Cult Classic or Award Winner?

  • It's my dream to go to film school and become a filmmaker. My question is... If you were a filmmaker, would you rather make a film that would gain Cult Status or win an Academy Award? I can honestly say I'd prefer my films gain Cult Status then win an Academy Award. A lot of my favorite films are Cult Classics. I love every film by Quentin Tarantino. Sure a few are Academy Awards Nominees, and Inglourious Basterds won Christoph Waltz an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. But all of Tarantino's films are Cult Classics, from Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction to Kill Bill Vol 1 & 2 and Deathproof. And let's not forget films like Serenity and Buffy The Vampire Slayer from Joss Whedon. There are numerous films that were panned by Critics, but loved by audiences everywhere. I would rather my films win the hearts and minds of millions of people, and be remembered well after I'm gone, then win some dinky award. Have you even watched the Academy Awards lately. Most of the winners are trash. Hugo was good, I'll give you that. But films like last years Best Picture, The King's Speech. Total garbage. Most films won't get nominated unless they're for the extremely old audience. Just like the critics who nominated them. Good old action, comedy, sci-fi, and horror films haven't been nominated since the 90's when Hollywood could still make good movies. I'll take Cult Status over and Oscar any day!

  • Answer:

Cult classic! Awards are always nice but cult classis live on forever, generation after generation. A lot of Oscar winning movies - people eventually stop talking about them. But cults...people will get sick of seeing them so many times, but always watch them. But that's just me.

I'd make a cult classic with potential to become mainstreen. Like Star Wars. I want it to change people's lives and draw from mythology, history, spirituality and literature. It would be a sci-fi fantasy or action- drama or other fantasy. It would have themes such as the classic good vs evil, brotherhood, loyalty etc. It would be something for all ages but made with adults in mind. I'd like to make an epic viking movie.
