What can you do with a degree in Digital Media and Broadcast Film?

Wanting to be a Film/TV Director - Help ?

  • I'm sixteen and what to be a Film/TV director Ive basically got it all planned. Go to college (starting sept'10): A2 FIlm Studies A2 Media Studies AS Photography A2 Computing Then Uni (starting Sept'12): BA Hons Degree - Film Production Then hopefully when I have enough cash, go to a film school in london (Can't estimate date): MA Film making degree - Filmmaking However there is a few questions. How do I get funding for a film? Is this profession purely freelance or can I be contracted with a company also? How would I go about finding a job in the industry upon my graduation from university, in order to earn enough for film school? It'll be tough, but I'm sure I can make it with perseverance. Many thanks guys, Jordan.

  • Answer:

Film is very much about paying your dues. This however means that a good part of that process is not getting paid at all. No degree in film is ever going to help you get anywhere in the industry. I know plenty of people who have degrees, funny enough almost none of them are film related. That being said, these courses will teach you the mechanics of film production and editing, the magic and the creativity, you'll have to discover for yourself. School does expose you to plenty of contacts and if they're impressed with you, they'll open the doors you'll need to get to where you want to go, including sources of funding for your shorts and if you're really lucky, for your features. I'm a produced screenwriter with feature film and TV credits.
