What's the difference between digital 3d and imax 3d?

What is the difference of Real D 3D and IMAX 3D?

  • I am going to watch Titanic in 3D but I saw those two. What is the difference? Which one is better? Why? Please explain. I am confused.

  • Answer:

"Real D 3D" uses a regular movie screen. IMAX 3D uses an IMAX theater - at least it's supposed to. Most movie theaters claim to have IMAX screens but they just have a larger regular movie screen. Remember when you were little and you'd go with your class to the science museum, and they always showed you a nature movie on this screen that literally wrapped inside a dome? That was an IMAX screen. Now imagine watching a regular movie on something like that, in 3D, so now it looks like the people falling off the decks are now falling from the ceiling and into your lap. Which is better? Depends. Some people don't like IMAX. It can be somewhat disorienting to some people, and, going back to those elementary school field trips, there always seemed to be that one kid who puked or screamed in terror when the film flew over the Grand Canyon in a helicopter. Considering that a IMAX 3D movie ticket costs about $20/person where I live, I think I'll just stick to the DVD I have at home.

As far as the 3d effect itself there really isn't much difference. Imax really just means it is on a larger screen. If at a multiplex it usually is only a few feet longer and higher than other screen at that complex. If a actual Imax theater it can be a much larger screen. Just depends. You have to call each Imax theater to find out how big that screen is.
