What are some metaphors of "finding yourself"?

When it comes to symbolism and metaphors only... what is your favourite movie?

  • If you were judging all the movies you watched on the symbolism and metaphors and what they represent for you. For me it is Stalker. The mixture of lighting, the color in it that is scarce, the dark cave like scenes- so symbolic and metaphors. BQ: Is that movie you chose, where would it rank among your all time favourite movies? BQ2: Favourite scene from the movie you chose? BQ3: What movie in your favourites do you watch the most?

  • Answer:

Pan's Labyrinth. The movie contains a great amount of metaphors and archetypal symbols telling another story it's as if Guillermo Del Toro intended the fantasy scenes as allegorical commentary on the Civil War. Which makes sense since Ofelia is going through this massive change and probably seen the brutalities of war that she makes up an imaginary world to deal with this. From the very beginning the symbolism/metaphoric storytelling technique has begun (Ofelia finds the missing eye and places it back into its socket. The "eye" might signify that things can be invisible and visible, a stark contrast to Captain Vidal puncturing a man's eye in one scene who doesn't believe in things that can be physically be seen. Also in ancient Egypt with the myth of Horus’ eye being restored by Toth. The importance of 'The Eye' isn't "an alien" idea.) These kinds of things can be found from beginning to end. Right to the part *spoiler* when Ofelia’s dying body has blood dripping from it onto the stones of the Labyrinth. The tree that looks like a womb, the frog that signifies gluttony and greed. Everything, BA: Definitely in my 'Top 10' My all-time favourite movies change a lot but the movies that stay consistently in my 10 favourites tend to be Return of the King, Pan's Labyrinth, Hunger. Right now Pan's would be ranked 6th. BA2: My gosh! There's so many! But the Pale Man chasing Ofelia and when she's trying to get the key has got to be one of my absolute favourites. BA3: I try not to watch my favourite movies a lot or it get's "ruined" and I get sick of it, but the Lord of the Rings Trilogy I've probably seen once or twice a year ever since their release... EDIT: N'aww shucks Umar! Thanks! I have to say I would've never known the meaning of "allegories" or "juxtaposing" let alone how to use it in a sentence, A lot of it is owed to taking English Lit. for my A-Levels, it was drilled in my brain to analyse a bulk of literary texts, compile in-depth character studies-- was a lot of work. Lol and even after all of that I managed to 'scrap by' and get a low B. I never realised how much I still remember till 'once in a blue moon' questions like this come by... Also! Please answer more questions :) I agree, Emma's answers are always a fantastic read.

Hi MJ :) I am not good at answering such questions, especially when I see the level of details that you and a couple of my friends (emjob & rebellion) love to go to. I am always floored by the effort and explanation put in the answers. The movie title that comes to my mind with this question is : The Fall (2006) www.imdb.com/title/tt0460791/ For me it symbolises how life and its traversal is completely different when viewed through the imagination of a child. The movie is a scenic feast with some brilliant performance by an eight year old kid. BA : Yes, maybe in a list of top 25. BA2 : There are a few scenes when the kid listens with apt attention to the story that is being narrated to her by a fellow patient in the hospital, which literally make you to fall in love with the innocence of that kid. BA3 : I don't usually repeat movies much, but I think I have watched American History X may be thrice :) edit : emjob hasn't answered this question yet, but if she does I am sure it would be loong one :) re-edit : Trust me Marina, you are doing great, avionics & literary champ are major feats...way to go girl !

The Shining: Hedge Maze At this stage in the movie, nothing seems too out of whack at the Overlook. But Danny and Wendy are entering a terrifying labyrinth from which there is no easy exit. Jack, looming over the maze like a giant or a devil, almost tips his hand; “you’ve always been the caretaker here,” Grady will tell him later, and , this scene makes him out to be the master of whatever bizarre ceremony we are about to witness. Of course, it also foreshadows the movies famous climactic scene, in which a nearly unrecognizable Jack chases Danny through the maze with an axe. The Animals in the maze move (in the book) which was put in when King remade his move a while back. BQ Yes, oh in the top 20, I love horror as you know. BQ2 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ley9k94GoZU&feature=colike i have many more too http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BbQBoLJIHOs&feature=colike BQ3 Halloween and A Perfect World ((Maddie)) crap, lost my badge lol

I'm really not the best judge of this part of movies, but my pick is Miller's Crossing. the metaphor of the hat worked not only for the film noir genre they were using but it brought out several underlying plot points. BQ: don't have a list because my favorites change so much, but it's probably in the top 50. BQ2: where the mob boss is attacked at his house and kills the hit men then walks down the road shooting the car with the tommy gun. he had seemed so foolish up until that scene. then you see how he got to be the boss, through sheer guts and bravado. BQ3: probably Office Space. when I've had a bad day, I just love to see them beat up that copier with a couple of bats while that song plays (can't remember the name--"back up in your @$$ with the resurrection" lol). cracks me up everytime.

American Beauty (1999). I studied this film is school and it is filled to the brim with imagery, colour symbolism and themes. We all know that it delves deep into themes we don't like to talk about, such as sexuality, materialism, violence and family issues. The rose itself is actually a special type of rose that although it has beautiful red petals, they rot quickly at the root. This obviously reflects the neighbourhood--perfect in appearance but corrupted when you 'look closer'. There's a famous shot in it where Lester is looking into his computer and the words and numbers form shapes that suggest he is in prison. Another scene where he's cleaning his hands on a tea towel and then throwing it onto a table filled with pictures of happiness--literally 'throwing in the towel' on life and fun. I should really stop now but you get the picture. BQ: Probably around 8 or so. BQ2: Definitely the dinner scene where Lester throws the asparagus against the wall and Caroline goes practically psychopathic while the daughter stares, aghast at how loony her parents really are. BQ3: First is Changeling. I especially like the scene where Angelina Jolie and Northcott are alone in the room, with Angie trying to get it out of him that he committed the murder. Second movie is Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. I could watch that forever, even though I know how it turns out.
