When should I start my community service for high school?

Im a freshman starting high school and i don't know how to start doing community service?

  • I know community service is something important for college but i don't know where to start. I live in houston so if anyone has any ideas where i can start please respond, thank you

  • Answer:

The easiest thing to do that I've found is during the summer, email whoever runs the summer school at the elementary level, and ask if they need any volunteers to help out. My sister and I did that, and it was so easy. We made copies for teachers occasionally, we made a poster, and we distributed snacks everyday. Oh, and since we chose the snack and just got all the supplies, we got to eat the best snacks ourselves, when there weren't enough for everyone. We only went 5 days a week, 7-11am. Yeah, it was waking up early but not a big deal. It was only 4 weeks. I'd suggest that one. =]

Start by finding out what clubs are offered at your high school and get involved with a couple of them. The student council at my high school did a lot of community service as well as other clubs. Another suggestion is to log on to DoSomething.org. You can type in your location and it will tell you about community service opportunities in your area. It will also gives a ton of ideas on projects you can start yourself. Glad you're wanting to get involved and help out in your community! Have fun and good luck finding something you're interested in!

Your school counselor is a good place, but there's an even easier one. Do a web search for community service/volunteer sites. There are several that will take an inventory of your interests and location, then match you with organizations that need volunteers. You may find some that you've never heard of before, or even find some different things to do that you never would have thought were service.

You can ask your guidance counselor. You might be able to do tutoring. You could also get involved in some clubs in school. Many do things like collect food for food pantries, work with elementary school children, do clean-ups around town, etc. Otherwise, check with local places like churches, nursing homes or hospitals. In the end, something like this is not going to matter a whole lot when it comes to getting into college unless you do something really special, like actually start an organization.

Usually most schools have after school clubs that give plenty of community service hours, or go to your local hospital, animal shelter, or rec. center and thell have plenty of community service for you!
