What to put in my portfolio?

I am going for a full scholarship, but I need a portfolio for my art - what is best to put in my portfolio?

  • I am applying for a full (Year 9) scholarship in a private school with my music and art talents - I've got my music sorted out (for any curious people, I'm playing Spanish Romance and (Russian) Hungarian Gypsy on the classical guitar after starting in September 2010). I'd like advice on what to put in my portfolio - it's winter and I can't really go outside to draw/paint anything or I'll get sick easily, and I am really scared about whether I'll get in or not :(

    Ooh this is a good one, you have the internet, use it you full advantage - look at what others did as information is everywhere and take from them and apply your own. You want to show a full range of artistic ability. Think about covering everything from graffiti art to charcoal drawings to decupage to photos. People like art that makes you think so how about magazine clippings of people from babies to old people arranged in a nice way on some card to show the progression and beauty of life, how about a drawing of a fly on the side of a plate of crumbs, or some nice sunset pictures, pictures of peoples hands and feet, or take some music sheets and turn it into art by distressing it and put some notes on the end that tails the music off in some weird way - it could actually be played too which they will love. Name it something cool like (taking from the music you play) 'a distressed spanish romance'. Literally i could go on forever about this stuff and i do :) Hope that helps you somewhat. Gem x

I'd try as many styles and techniques as possible, pen and ink, pastels, oils, acrylics - you can always do these from photos, or include photos as part of your portfolio. A sketch book always goes down well even if it's quick sketches and maybe a few words explaining what the sketch is about and how you plan to develop the ideas.
