It also may spark an interest into what they want to do the rest of their life. It's about culture and going beyond merely what it takes to survive. Otherwise, we might as well be stuck back in the cave man days. Besides, have you seen how kids write nowadays? It's sad when immigrants have a better grasp of the English language than people born in the US.

We study literature so we can learn how to think and understand. We don't have to memorize, but find meaning and enjoy.
