Why are the legs of insects not always identical?

My daughter's teacher insists that insects have 7 legs and...?

  • insects and bugs are two separate species. Can someone please clarify this for me, and I'd love it if you named your source so I can show my daughter. She flat out refuses to believe that her teacher could be wrong. I thank you in advance for your help!

Definition of insect: Any of numerous usually small arthropod animals of the class Insecta, having an adult stage characterized by three pairs of legs and a body segmented into head, thorax, and abdomen and usually having two pairs of wings. Insects include the flies, crickets, mosquitoes, beetles, butterflies, and bees. Definition of bug: An insect or similar organism, such as a centipede or an earwig. See Regional Note at lightning bug. So all insects are bugs, though not all bugs are insects, in the same fashion that all humans are mammals, but not all mammals are humans.

I know your daughter's teacher. I'm dating her. She clarified for me that the insect's seventh leg is his pecker, and bugs is a species of bunny. That's all folks.
