Witch are the Top 10 most useful English words?

What kind of words (English) should a child of 10 years (11 in September) be able to spell?

  • It would really help a young lady aged 10 to know this. Maybe you have kids of a similar age. I would love to know what words they can spell comfortably

  • Answer:

I think all children are different but they should be able to spell basic words by 10 if you are concerned go into the childs school and ask them what they think

'Official' UK lists and spelling skills by age available in National Literacy Strategy Spelling Bank booklet (web address below). It's a bit daunting because it covers everything, but it does also contain some useful games and activities. Worst thng you can do is panic and apply too much pressure. If your child has a problem, talk to their teacher.

A few websites that may give you an idea of what a ten year old is required to spell. However, I'm sure her teacher could give you list, or your county schools office may be able to help also. Good luck.

I'm not sure what country you are from. I'm a year 6 teacher (age 10-11) in the UK. Follow this link to see a list of medium frequency words which the government believes your child should be able to spell, please note the framework only provides lists for up to year 4 (ages 8-9) as after this stage pupils should be able to more or less spell anything or be competent enough to know how to use a dictionary: http://www.standards.dfes.gov.uk/primary/publications/literacy/nls_framework/486193/919381 This framework does not make allowances for pupils who have learning difficulties or who have English as an additional language (EAL). All children work at different levels and please only take this as guidance only! If your really concerned talk to your child's class teacher, who can give you a list. Hope this helps

So these are the sort of words that they are expected to be able to spell and she should be aiming for. http://rossa.blogs.com/weblog/files/sats_spellings_list.pdf For help to practise spelling go to: http://www.saintambrosebarlow.wigan.sch.uk/upperjuniorspelling.htm (For Year 5 and Year 6) For online spelling activities try: http://www.harcourtschool.com/activity/word_builder/level5/5_01.html and www.woodlands-junior.kent.sch.uk/inter…
