Any suggestions for a good science fair project?

My 2nd grade daughter needs a science fair project, any suggestions?

  • Some sort of earth science would be preferable, but we're open to anything really, as long as its fun and educational. Her teacher was very late in getting us the info (much to my dismay) thus we only have two weeks to complete it, so keep that in mind also. Thanks for you ideas!!

  • Answer:

My favorite one was one my sister did once when I was a child. Many years later I suggested the same idea to my son, it went over well both times in both decades. Taste Buds. Do a drawing, or model of a tongue. Have sugar and salt there for people to taste. Show which parts of the tongue taste salty and sweet. Use a cow tongue if you want to be really graphic! People like the interactive part of this - tasting the sugar and salt.

Volcano...They love to build the volcano almost as much as they love to make it explode...Make a clay or paper mache volcano leaving a space to fit a soda can. (make it around a soda can and then remove can.) Paint and decorate. Then when ready to do the explosion, open a can of any type of soda and drop in a couple Mentos...the candy. No other "volcano recipe" beats this and it's so simple. If the Mentos are too big, freeze them and then smask with hammer to get smaller pieces to drop in. Have fun.

I just did a search on Science Projects for 2nd grade and there are lots of sites.

Grow cress on cotton wool. Have three dishes, grow one completely in the dark, one in a dark box with a window on one side and one in normal light. If you have two weeks you have time to try it out and then do it for real, it takes about five days to grow.
