Moving to the Middle East?

What do you need to go to school if you're moving to America as a middle school student?

  • My mom's friend moved to America about 2-3 weeks ago from South Korea to do research at a university in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He doesn't know any English and his daughter will be moving in with him from Korea in about 2-3 weeks and will want to attend a middle school. After a year, they plan on returning to Korea. My mom doesn't know a lot of English either and asked me for help on this, but I don't know anything about this subject either. She did tell me that the father has a J-2 Visa (I don't know anything about Visa's and I don't know whether that's enough to be able to enroll into a school). The first thing I did was ask my mom to tell the daughter to ask one of the teachers in her middle school in Korea for help or if they have any "International Affairs"-sort-of program to help prepare students who will leave to a foreign school, but she said that there isn't any. So my question is: As an immigrant, are there any additional steps required to attend a school? I looked up the schools that are closest to where the father lives right now and the closest middle school is Cedar Riverside Community School. I went to their website (which is under construction), and they have many students who are immigrants (108) and an English as a Second Language program. It seems like the perfect middle school for the daughter to go to, but is a community school the same as just any other public school? All of the middle schools in Anchorage, Alaska are just named "[Something] Middle School" so I was curious when I saw the results for middle schools in Minneapolis. They also require that you fill out a form to enroll at the school, but they can probably do that if they just walked in during school hours. Thank you for reading this and thank you in advance for any help or suggestions. If there's any information I'm missing that would help anyone answer these questions, please ask and I'll ask my mom for those.

  • Answer:

Hi...for most school they do not ask or care if you are a immigrant. And yes, community school is like a middle school. But there is also a J.R highschool. All of them are basically the same thing. You can not just go into a school and fill out some paper work. It requires some time. They will probably ask for paper work from her previous school. They also ask howmuch income is and things that. As for other immigrants in the school, they probably mean mexicans, and south Americans and Chinese. Not a lot of South Koreans. It will be a hard treancision from South Korea to America. Especially is she does not know how to red write or speak English. I really hoped this helped.
