How do you tell the difference between ethical and unethical farms?

Can anyone tell me the difference of Farms (paricularly Agriculture) in USA and India?

  • Answer:

In India, agriculture is done mostly by individuals on small plots of land. In the US, agriculture is done on large farms owned by businesses and the "workers" are just employees. (There are a few individual farmers left, but they still work on large acreages.) In India, the farm work is done by manual labor; in the US, tilling, planting, and harvesting are mostly done by machines, though there are some things that are still harvested by hand (fruit, spinach). In India, the farmers wait on the monsoons to water their plants (and wait on the monsoon to know when to plant). In the US, while rain is essential particularly when starting a new crop, the farmers use a lot of irrigation. In India, they use natural fertilizers; in the US, extensive artificial fertilizers. In India, they use a wide variety of local seeds thus protecting their food supply in the event of some blight. That is, they pratice biodiversity. In the US, the food supply is built up from a very few seed types thus putting the entire population at risk in the event of some virus. In India, individual farmers are poor. In the US, even a small farmer can live more-or-less in the style of everyone else. In India, agriculture is a national duty. In the US, agriculture is a profit-machine. In the US, all foods are laden with pesticides and other toxins, like Mercury, while in India, natural pesticides are used, thus poisoning fewer people.
