What would be better, the IB program or a magnet?

Do you mostly see nerds/geeks participating in the IB program in high school?

  • I am in eighth grade and I will br going on to high school next year. I applied for the IB program in the high school that i am going to but I am worried that I will be surrounded by nerds. I am a rocker and I really want to be around people who are like me, not like nerds. I need to know wether there is any rockers at all in the IB program and wether the majority of the people that participate in the IB program in high school are nerds? If you are currently attending the IB program then you opinion would really help me. Please. I know that I probably should be caring more about the benefits the IB program will grant me in the future, but understand that it is very important for me to socialize with people who are simila r to me, and I think that being surrounded by nerds will not only feel awkward, but it will make me feel VERY out of place.

Ouch! that was a slap in the face. I'm currently in the IB program at my school, and yeah, I know what you mean about that nerd thing. That's what everyone thinks. =) In reality, the IB program is full of all kinds of people, just all kinds of people that are exceptionally smart. I mean, you're going to find a few nerds, but just like in any other setting well....they get picked on. Especially for being IB. Like, in my school, when someone does something particularly nerdy in our IB classrooms, what do we say? "Wow, that was some IB stuff right there." Within the IB kids. =) So yeah... all nerds? I really don't think so. We all poke fun at the program and with some people I know we're like "yeah we're international buttheads..." You're a rocker type, right? actually, I went out to a concert with a bunch of my IB friends today. You see what I mean? your question is really understandable...I mean IB is good for you and all, but you don't want to have no life. Well, honestly, that's a stereotype. =) IB kids, believe it or not, are normal people too. =p It's just that behind that normal people thing, well, yeah, we all speak foreign languages and take 11th grade math in 9th grade. That doesn't mean we're all nerdy at all...we complain about our teachers and do other stuff just like other people. If you can handle the work, then go into the program...you'll probably just meet a whole bunch of other people that don't want to be nerds, and it'll be fun. Geez. "Can't go in the program if there aren't any rockers!" Please open up your mind. =\ but if you must must ask, yeah, at my school, there's a lot of "rocker" IB kids and we're like involved in the music activities and stuff and you'll often see IB kids walking around with guitars in their hands... there was even this one guy that recorded a rock CD for his personal project...so yeah...

I do the Full IB program in my school. And I'm not a nerd. I'm latino, play football, and one of the popular kids. You will aleast will always have one kid that u kno in a class. And there is always afterschool. Some of the nerds also may have some of your interest too.

The question you have to ask yourself: do you care about your education or your social life more? Yes, the IB program will have a high proportion of "nerds," but, as an intellectual myself, you'll find that those "nerds" actually can have similar interests as you and might actually be someone you can associate with. Don't be quick to judge

well, i wasnt in IB, but i went to the high school with LOTS of IB students. well, from what i saw, there were pretty cool IB students. some were pretty hot, cute guys, and the girls were really pretty. i envyed them cause they were so good looking and smart at the same time. lol. well, even if there ARE nerds, im pretty sure there'll be some people u can hang out with that's suitable for u. good luck!!

Small 8th grade "rocker" boy, What classes you take only determines the people you have to sit in class with, not who you hang out with in between breaks or at lunch -- sure, you have to talk to your classmates for homework help and stuff but think of it as blessing them with your cool, rocker, status. Hah! I hate to generalize, but to at least answer your question and ignore the jibes, these people you call "nerds" tend to be the quieter hard-working types usually in sciences or mathematics, just because these classes take deliberation and discipline to learn... Subjects like English, Art, History, (languages), etc. tend to have more talkative kids just because these subjects are more fluid in terms of what's right and what's wrong, so studying them means discussing theories or being imaginative/creative... IB Music maybe? It really depends on your school. And finally, you're in 8th grade! Who knows what you will be in 4 years, maybe you too will be a nerd :O)

well theres only one way to find out ....quit later u know......but yea ur kinda cruel :(

i think it depends more on the population of your school. if the HS has a lot of "nerds" then their IB program would have a lot of nerds. my HS had a good mix of a lot of social groups and the IB program was also mixed (with not many "nerds"). why dont you encourage some friends to take classes with you? or meet some new people, even if they are "nerds". they probably feel out of place like you do.
