Good Universities at NSW?

Good, Practical, considered high by universities etc. GCSE Subject choices?

  • Hi I'm in year 9 and recently got my GCSE Option form a couple of days ago. I've currently been entered to do double science gcse which starts in year 9 (which i'm taking in june). The other subjects I'm want to take in year 10 are: French Spanish Photography (maybe) ICT Business Studies (maybe) History Music (maybe) We deffo have to do History because of the governments new E Bac, and one language but apart from that, which subjects do you think are the best, most practical, a good GCSE subject and what Universities are interested in? Also with Business Studies, I've heard that it isn't very good and isn't considered very high by Universities or as a good GCSE subject, although I've heard others saying its really good and Universities like it so I'm quite confused! Out of Business Studies and Music, which subject would you say is good, high, better and most practical to take for GCSE? Is photography also good, useful and practical? Basically, Business and Music can be my reserves, but I'm trying to figure out which one is the best one to choose to actually take. Also can I have opinions on whether I've made good option choices!! Thanks soo much if you can help!! :) xx

  • Answer:

If you have any idea as to what career you wish to have when you are older, then try and choose your subjects around this. For example, if you are interested in working in something like the media, then photography would be a good option. But if you want to be a nurse, then photography isn't going to make much difference for you. Subjects like Business Studies would be useful because that can be related to almost any job. If you don't know what you want to do as a job, then just pick subjects that you think you will enjoy most or be best at, so you know you can aim at getting the best grades possible, which will in turn give you more options when choosing your A-levels. Its A-Level subject choices that you need to think about a lot more, because universities look at them mainly, not gcses, in order to decide whether to give students a place or not. But that for you is 2 years away so just focus on doing well in whatever gcse subjects you take :)

GCSE's really don't give you anything when it comes to university. But you do need good GCSE's to therefore do good A Levels so you can therefore get into a good university.

At this age it's best to take a wide range of subjects that you enjoy, and when it's time to take a levels then you need to think for the future

with all due respect photography and business studies are known as 'soft subjects' if i were you i would do art instead of photography (i do art) and even thought it's seen as soft, it shows you can work to deadlines and shows a different side to you rather than all academic. business studies really is a softies option, i am sorry, you should definitely go for music instead of business studies. at the top secondary schools they would never offer business studies at gcse so just think of it that way that it just isn't very respected history french and spanish are great also, these are very respected GCSEs and if you opt to do these for a level, even more respected good luck! xxx
