What would I do in a hospital for Work Experience?

My school signed me up for work experience that has no relevance to what I wanna do?

  • I wanted a physiotherapy one because it's linked to medicine but they put me in some business one without asking me. I doubt I can withdraw now. People also keep telling me it officially counts as work experience if I do it at the same time as everyone else (apparently if I decide to look for one now it doesn't count as work experience..that's what my teachers told me). I can definitely find doctors to shadow and do a lot of volunteer work during weekends and stuff. Would it matter that the "official" work experience through the school is not really helpful for my medicine application? If I find a doctor to shadow and also help out at a hospital/clinic, would that not be considered work experience? Why does everyone keep telling me it has to be at the same time as everyone else is doing it? I'm in Year 12 and I'm gonna shadow doctors for a year. I'm volunteering at an autism centre and will volunteer at a special needs one. Would that business work experience ruin my application since it's the only "official" one through my school? The rest might not be very official except for a letter to prove I've actually shadowed the doctors and helped out. I'm a little confused to be honest..

  • Answer:

Any work experience will provide you with valuable opportunities. If you want to do medicine you need to be organised, professional, adaptable, team worker etc - all of which you can demonstrate on your business placement. It sounds like you have good plans lined up for other relevant experience which will help in any future applications. Making the most of an opportunity you don't really want will also show your adaptability and sincerity within the workplace.

Other answers

Any work experience is valuable. It's great that there's any available in the first place! It won't hinder your chances at all, in fact, it will only make them better. Any volunteer work, whether it has to do with doctors or not, will help you in the long run. It doesn't matter at all if it has to do with your preferred career.
