What classes are important if i want to become a psychiatrist?

What classes should I take in high school to become a psychiatrist?

  • This have me so stressed out this whole summer! My guidance counsler was of no help when I had to chose my classes. Any way, I want to be a psychiatrist when I get older. What classes should I start taking in high school to prepare me? Another question. For the field that I am interested in, should I continue learning Spanish (spanish 3)

  • Answer:

Just so you know the difference between Psychology and Psychiatry first: Psychology is the study of the human mind and behaviour. It is the study of what makes us think certain things, hate and love things, our dreams and other brain-related issues. Psychiatry is the medical speciality in diagnosing and curing mental and/or addictive disorders such as: ADHD, Depression, Obsessive Compulsive Behaviour, etc. Both subjects require reasonably good mathematical skills, good English skills and good biology skills. A lot of other skills are taught at college/university. You also need patience and good people skills. However, I do not see the need for Spanish unless you wish to take your services abroad.

The most important are biology and chemistry. You also need strong math and english skills. Everything else you need will be provided in university. Continuing on with Spanish is a very good idea. If you can speak more then one language, you will have an advantage over others when you are looking to apply to med school, and later when you are job hunting. Good luck.

Well, since becoming a psychiatrist involves completing a M.D., you should take courses that are math, biology, and chemistry intensive. When you get to college, you could supplement that experience (still keeping a curriculum I listed above going) with psychology and anthropology courses--ones that discuss different aspects of human behavior.

Psychiatry is a medical specialty, which means you have to go to medical school, get your M.D. and do a residency in psychiatry. In order to get into medical school, you need to get a bachelor's degree, preferably in a hard science. In order to get accepted into college with a hard science major, you need to take as much science and math as possible, getting the best grades you can. Therefore, in high school, you want to take biology, chemistry, anatomy, and go as high in math as you possible can. All the best.

For a psychiatry degree you'll need to get a doctorate in medicine as well so you'll need to take biology classes. This is not necessary if you wish to be a psychologist thought. Make sure you know the differences between the two. One is more therapy oriented and the other more medicine oriented. You'll also need some social science classes, they will help in your field. Many agencies hiring psychiatrist look for bilingual people. So this will definitely help you gain a job over others.

Science, science, science. Psychiatry is a medical degree. To make it easier for you in college and graduate school, start building your natural sciences background now. Keep learning Spanish. A lot of medical terms are used in Latin, and Latin is the base of Spanish.
