Jobs in the social services field.

Should I go back to school and for what? I work in healthcare now...formerly in social services.?

  • I work for a large Medical Insurance company in a case management/social services position. I have been with them almost a year after being downsized from State government 3 different times in different jobs in social services. I have a dual bachelor's degree (B.S./B.A.) in Criminology/Poli Sci and a master's degree (M.S.) in Organizational Management in Human Services. I want to grow with the company I work with now as I'm in my mid 30's looking for stability. The field I am in is focused on nursing/health care while my background is more geared towards managment in human services. I'd like to go back to school but not sure what do focus on? I thought about getting a Doctorate so that I can teach at the College level......although not sure it fits with my goals in my career at present. I'm confused about where to focus myself so that I can grow in my career. Should I adjust my goals to fit more within the corporate culture I am now working for? Perhaps another master's degree in Health Services or some type of health related certifications or even Nursing school? Any advice would help, thanks!

  • Answer:

Ok to teach at College level in most cases you do NOT need a Doctorate. However it would be nice. In a number of colleges all you would need is the masters. My wife has 2 masters and teaches in a junior college and brings in about 96 k per year. Not bad for 6 years of college. Have you been tested in counseling for things you would like to do. With the correct test it will steer you in the right direction. As a personal observation you are all over the place in jobs and education. you need to find the job (career) that you really want to do and stick with it (sorry). Nursing and Rad Tech are fields that are always in need and will be for some time. Also don't overlook a physicians assistant. Best of luck to you. Mot
