How do I get my parents to let me go to a boarding school?

Boarding school information help!?

  • I might be moving to North Carolina next year and if I do I want to try to go to boarding school. 1. Can you get scholarships for boarding schools because they are so expensive? 2. Are there boarding schools that specialize in fine arts because I play oboe and could easily get in on oboe scholarship. 3. Do good boarding schools look good on college applications? 4. How could I convince my parents to let me go to boarding school instead of a public school? I think that's it but is there anything else that I should know like pros and cons? Thanks =]

:) I'm a headmistress of a private school in California! 1. Yes you can get scholarships and loans for boarding schools. Contact the school's financial aid department and talk to an advisor. 2. Yes, there are special boarding schools for kids who are in the performing arts, but keep in mind that they are highly competitive and their scholarships are highly coveted. Try early and try again and again :) 3. Boarding schools and private schools stack up well in college applications because of reputation and the kinds of courses they offer and the way the schools have the freedom to teach. I admit, a lot has to do with prestige, but much more has to do with your grades and your extra-curricular activities and what kind of determination you have to make the most of your education. 4. It depends on your family. My family growing up would have been a hard-sell. Just trying to get them to let me go to school across town was a big battle. Pick your battles. Give them plenty of information. Pretend like you are trying to sell them something on an infomercial, but be honest and give them options. If your parents see that you are mature about this and serious, they might be more willing than you think to support you in this situation. Best of Luck!

Check out Randolph-Macon in VA, it's a quasi-military boarding school that admits girls and my kid nearly went, but her dad withdrew his financial backing the month before it started. It is an awesome sounding school. Tell your parents you will get more scholarships to college, thereby saving them money for college tuition, if you attend a boarding school. Randolph-Macon does have a band, and let me tell you, it is HARD to find a boarding school that has a decent band. By the way, my kid also plays the oboe and says it's a challenging instrument which is why that instrument was selected. What grade are you going into? If 10th or up, it would be easier to negotiate going as it's not as expensive as 4 years of boarding school. Hey, why not make a deal with your parents that if you have a 4.0 that you can attend boarding school in 11th and 12th grades? That will give you something to work toward and your parents won't have to pay so much for boarding school. Also, contact the boarding schools for financial aid info, IMMEDIATELY.. Isn't there a PUBLIC HIGH BOARDING SCHOOL in North Carolina? Call the school board and investigate, because I'm pretty sure there might be, and the cost is thus minimal to attend. Get going on that, because you have deadlines for applying, etc.
