Which test should i take - ielts or toefl?

What do you recommend TOEFL or IELTS ?

  • I am applying to a UK university and since i am an international student they have asked for either TOEFL or IELTS. They want the following marks for each : TOEFL iBT 87 (no less than 21 in listening and writing, 22 in reading and 23 in speaking) IELTS 5.5 (no less than 5.0 in any element) Which test should i take ?

  • Answer:

    Take the IELTS in this case! For two important reasons: 1) IELTS is based on British English, TOEFL is based on American English. 2) A 6.5 on the IELTS is equivilent to anywhere between 79 and 93 on the TOEFL. This means that if you would have scored a 79 or 80 on the TOEFL, you would not qualify, but you likely would have gotten a 6.5 on the IELTS and thus qualified. So it is in your favor to take the IELTS. Wish you the best.

Given the other answers already present: IELTS would be preferable since you want to study in the UK. At times the Brits can get a bit snobby about such things; hence the score asked for with TOEFL is relatively higher compared to the 5.5 on IELTS. Just one additional consideration, Toefl is a much more communicative exam. That is if you can communicate effectively (even with imperfections in grammar, etc.) it is still possible to obtain a high score. IELTS on the other hand has a format very similar to that of other Cambridge ESOL exams.

I think M. Andrew understood that you needed a 6.5. Your question says 5.5. Then its even more of a no-brainer: IELTS not TOEFL. 87 is very high compared to a 5.5.

Those scores are very similar. Pick either one. They're also very low. An IELTS score of 5.5 would leave you struggling to understand any complicated material.
