Both are charged with assault, ASBOs are taken out and suspended even though Johnny started it. Diversionary conferences and parent meetings conducted. Mobile phone video shown on 6 internet sites. Scenario 2: Jeffrey won't sit still in class, disrupts other students. 1977 - Jeffrey is sent to the principal's office and given 6 of the best. Returns to class, sits still and never disrupts the class again. 2007 - Jeffrey is given huge doses of Ritalin. Counselled to death. Becomes a zombie. Tested for ADHD. Answer:
Mainly two things: 1) a compensation culture that encourages everyone to always play everything extra safe in case they get sued 2)the illusion that we can ever completely control our environment

Discipline and respect. In 1977 a teacher could still clip you around the ear..... now your parents are not even allowed to do it!! Kids of 15 demanding respect..... for what? What exactly do they deserve respect for? I grew up in the 60's and 70's, no one in our area had money.... we never stole or beat up kids for the dinner money... now kids want it all without having to work for it.... you think it's bad now, what will it be like in 2037?

1977 vs 2007 1977 : Long hair 2007 : Longing for hair 1977 : Acid rock 2007 : Acid reflux 1977 : Trying to look like Marlon Brando or Liz Taylor 2007 : Trying NOT to look like Marlon Brando or Liz Taylor 1977 : Seeds and stems, man 2007 : Roughage 1977 : Going to a new, hip joint 2007 : Receiving a new hip joint 1977 : Rolling Stones 2007: Kidney Stones 1977 : Screw the system 2007: Upgrade the system 1977 : Parents begging you to get your hair cut 2007: Children begging you to get their heads shaved 1977 : Passing the drivers' test 2007 : Passing the vision test 1977 : Whatever 2007 : Depends Just in case you weren't feeling too old today, this will certainly change things. The people who are starting university this year were born in 1989. They are too young to remember the space shuttle blowing up. Their lifetime has always included VIRUS & AIDS. Bottle caps have always been screw off and plastic. The CD was introduced the year they were born. They have an answering machine & mobile phone They have always had cable. They cannot fathom not having a remote control. Popcorn has always been cooked in the microwave. They never took a swim and thought about Jaws. They can't imagine what hard contact lenses are. They do not care who shot J. R. and have no idea who J. R. even was. They don't have a clue how to use a typewriter. Do you feel old yet?

http://www.swindonadvertiser.co.uk/news/hammerattacktrial/ This is exactly what you mean isn't it! Scary to think I have kids in primary school at the mo. What will seniors will be like? Well at least they'll have the bad incidents recorded on the security tapes.!! My only bad memories of school were of worrying about whether my trousers were the right shade or grey so that I wouldn't be sent home, eventhough my Mum picked them to match my sensible Hush Puppy shoes. Bumping into the tough girl in the school and having her give me a scary look! Not handing in my homework or sitting next to the smelly kid. If I could give my kids my childhood I would. Playstations are great (I love mine) but I'd give everything back to make the majority or kids as good as only the few are now. Perhaps modern parents want for so much more and then the kids expect it too. They get it regardless of the cost and impact.

Children are also wield too much influence. In 1977, a child would not go home and tell his parents that a teacher had scolded him for misbehaving, because he would have received further punishment. Today, children quite flippantly tell their parents about how their teacher punishes them and consequently they come under great scrutiny and are undermined for it. I think scenario 2 is quite pertinent. People try to psycho-analyse children's behaviour to a ridiculous degree. A child does no have any pre-conceived ideas; much like a dog they require training and discipline to become fully hospitable members of society.

Lack of parental discipline. Also the parents being kids themselves when they first start having them!!!!!

Differences include: 1977 - children get home from school (having walked, biked or been on a bus) and play outside with mates until 6:30-ish. Come in for evening meal. 2007 - children driven home by parent/guardian. Spend 3 hours in front of a screen (watching TV or playing video games/.internet/msm'ing all those that they've just been at school with). Then take-away grease bucket or overly processed tins or packets of food that lack minerals, vitamins and other vital trace elements. Too much salt, too much fat, not enough fibre, and all manner of strange man-made chemicals instead.... whose long term and/or residual effects we cannot yet even begin to imagine!!! Their digestive systems are having a terrible time and their pyscho-biological systems suffer as a result. Add into this the poor parenting that is a consequence of a misguided idea of what 'liberal' means and the power of IMMEDIATE CONSEQUENCES FOR YOUR ACTIONS taken away from teachers. So the kids are not only messed up by being overloaded with chemicals, bombarded by the media to want 'stuff', they have effectively had all boundaries broken down. They don't know what to do, so they run on primitive urges, driven by the weird chemical soup they live on (it must be good, it says so on the TV!). Read 'Lord of The Flies' to see what happens when boundaries are taken away. They try to establish their own, but with limited understanding and only partially completed brains, it is not nice. There was also a study done in the north of England a few years ago in a few Primary Schools. Crisps (er - 'chips' to you americans) chips (er - 'fries' to said new-worlders) and sweets (candy???) were all taken off of the school menu. The children were given fruit to eat and real food at lunch times that wasn't meat-heavy or fried... The change in behaviour was stunning. Kids that were ritalined to the eyeballs usually were able to sit in class and work happily. Their test scores rocketed. Everyone was happy! However, a year or two later, when other schools followed suit, parents were up in arms. They were coming around to the school at breaks and lunch-times to LITERALLY push McDonald's burgers, crisps packets and other junk through the school gates. And the right-wing press called the experiment loony, rather than the parents! It's a twisted world, all right. But the biggest problem is that these kids are now of an aged (and - sadly - of a mind) to breed.
