repetition. your mind is good at forgetting things so you have to go over and over the material again to get it to stick. good luck! lol...i hate essays especially after finals!

Hm.... depends whether you're a visual, kinestethic, or auditorial learner. Social studies requires a lot of passages to read right? As I'm a visual learner, I learn by watching tapes, or read books with lots of pictures. Auditorial will record the book or listen to auditorial books. I don't know about kinestethic, because historical events cannot be revisited, right? I tried acronym and flash cards too, it really helps. You can try a dozen of tips, and none would suit you, you just have to combine them, to make it good. And remember, no enthusiasm in learning the subject would eventually failed all those efforts above.

I will reiterate what Andrew said. Thus, repetition is the key. Sure, everyone remembers things differently, but I can tell you from personal experience that studying things over and over (e.g. memorising) helped me through many a test and exam. In fact in some cases I didn't even know what the answer really meant. Rather, I just knew that it fitted in to where it was supposed to go. Hopefully this method can work for you too though. Good luck.

Do you know the general topics of your essay test? I would recommend asking yourself the following questions about the topics. Who? What? When? Where? Why? and How? If you can answer those questions confidently about an essay questions with more than 5 sentences, then you are probably pretty good with the material. It also helps if you connect silly ideas to help you remember facts and fragmented pieces of information. Remember that no one is going to care about how you remember the information except for you. So think of the most ridiculous, silly, bizarre things you can to help you remember stuff. It may help to put some things to song. Make up your own tune or use a tune that you already know well and like. If you have a week or so to study for the exam, take one major topic a day and study that stuff, then each day review what you had studied the previous day. This helps alot with stress and last minute cramming.

When I was in school I always studied to music... and as I would remeber facts I would do it to te tune or beat of a certain song... so when I was in class I could humm the sound an in my head add the lyrics (facts) in... always worked for me... not so good with math facts though. You can also do a google serch for memorization techniques and maybe some of them will help.

Whenever you're studying, particularly if it's just straight memorization, one of the most important concepts is to study in small pieces rather than cramming all the info in the night before. Your brain processes information more effectively a little at a time, which will help move the information from short term memory into long term memory. I have found that even on a smaller scale, studying a subject for a few minutes and then coming back to it an hour or two later is often more effective than trying to memorize lots of information at the same time. Also, mneumatic tricks are helpful, of course, such as making acronyms or a unique or funny sentence where the first letter of each word represents something else. Flashcards can help as well as writing things out on paper. Sometimes I draw little pictures to help me remember things since I am such a visual learner. I hope this helps!

I am a history teacher, and I have never considered my essay questions memorization tests. Most essay questions are given to see if you truly understand the information given. You should definitely have some facts memorized to present in your essay, but more important than the memorization of facts is the understanding of how those facts relate to each other and the topic on which you are writing. Just facts do not necessarily answer the question.
