Why end a play on a cliffhanger?

Why end a play on a cliffhanger?

  • I'm doing some coursework for drama and wondered why a play may end on a cliffhanger when there isn't a sequel, thank you :)

  • Answer:

A cliffhanger forces the reader to use their imagination. It leaves the reader unsatisfied and makes the reader think about possible options and their consequences. It provokes more discussion than having one set ending.
