What Is Homework?

I am having trouble with staying on task and doing my homework, what do I do?

  • I have trouble with doing my homework, I find that the more I worry about doing it the more I hate school and the teachers. I need to figure out something because I get to work on my homework get somewhat through it then just lose thought and can not concentrate. My parents both get on my case and I know that I should be doing it but then I get side tracked on other stuff. I get distracted very easy whether it is a fly or just fooling around with my pencil. I tried to do my homework like fully throughout and ended up staying up till about 11 at night and I have to get up at 5 to get ready for school. I need to have some advice as what to do. any ideas? please dont tell me that I am lazy or junk like that because I do a lot of work just not my homework, I do study alot for classes and get 90 to 100%'s on the tests and stuff. just I cant do the homework.

  • Answer:

One thing that helps is find times throughout your school day to do at least the bulk of it. Do it at lunch, brunch, free times in classes. Usually at home I want to drum, play video games, go on the computer, watch TV, read, or do something fun. But at school, there is NOTHING to distract me. What, more school work? What, walking around? So when you get home, you'll have none or just a little.

what you need is to segment your work .... no one can concentrate for hours. In fact the learning curve shows that attention span declines from the minute you start working. Here is what u can do .... put a clock next to your work place.... and work honestly for a max of 40 minutes. If work doesn't require computer stay away from it.... close it so u don't get distracted. Allocate certain hours for different subjects and try earnestly to meet those goals.... if someone distracts you .... tell them to go away... After 40 minutes .... take a 20 minute break.... btw thats what im doing now.... between physics test studying.... the best part about doing this is that if there is a good tv show that u like and is likely to distract you.... you will not be able to watch it completely.... and overtime... you will be conditioned to be not distracted by tv. As far minute objects are related.... if something distracts you its because your mind is thinking about what to do next .... but if you set a schedule of what to do while studying ... everytime you look at that clock you'll know u have to work . Besides that don't have food near work.... don't try to multitask.... and have ambient light and temperature in the room.... don't close the doors... absolute silence is a big distraction... some ambient noise like other people or random noises around the house are required for focus.... Everything i have said I learned it in Psychology and Biology so its subject to change without notice... that was a joke .... sorry I would love to tell you more but my 20 minutes are coming to an end....

Do go in and see a school counselor. That is exactly one of the very things they are there for. You will receive multiple ideas and strategies for sticking with it and they might even recommend a mentor for a time. This is already making a real painful place in your mind and it can be solved. Take the bull by the horns - so to speak - and get ways to get it done to be at peace. Don't let anyone - or anything keep you from getting someone to help you before another day goes by. Results probably won't happen overnight, but with due diligence and patience with yourself you will have it resolved in a couple weeks and really feel good about yourself. I feel for you and wish you all the best.

I used to be EXACTLY the same way. My old ways still tempt occasionally, but I dunno, this year something just kicked in, and now I'm fine. I hope your study skills kick in soon!

You should be somewhere away from other people in the house. Only work on your homework for about 30 minutes, then take a 10-15minute break then go back to doing homework and see if that helps any. You might try listening to music to block out all the background noise. Do you hae trouble focusing in class? There is a slight possibility you could have ADHD.

Hmmm, interesting. I have a problem similar to that too, sometimes I just can't focus. Here's some advice: If you have to study for a test or something, get that out of the way first. Deal with everything that mite distract you first, then do your homework. Stay in a room that is more or less empty, if clutter easily distracts you. Tell your family and friends that you do not want to be disturbed until you are done. Take short breaks every 15 minutes to go to the bathroom, eat a snack, whatever. Focus, and try to clear your mind of anything else that might be happening around you or that you might be thinking about. This usually works for me, and I hope it works for you too! Good Luck!

Since studying doesn't seem to be the problem for you, start breaking up everything into micro-tasks. Tell yourself, "Self, you are going to do the next 3 problems and then we'll take a quick stretch break." Continue this pattern for the duration of the assignment by using different amounts of work and different methods of reward. You have to convince your body that doing homework produces a positive outcome.
