How do I convince my science teacher to give me extra credit?
-
I have a B- in the class even though I've worked so hard throughout the year. There's a week left of school, and I really want to raise my grade to a solid B. How do I convince her to give me extra credit?

Answer:
Does your teacher have a policy on extra credit? Some teachers do not give ANY extra credit - no matter what. If your teacher has that policy, then they aren't going to change their mind. Because, if they offer extra credit to you, they then HAVE to offer it to all of their other students in order to be fair. That's a LOT of extra work for the teacher. If your teacher DOES let their students do extra credit, you can't just go in to them and say "You HAVE to give me extra credit." It is all about attitude. If you go to your teacher DEMANDING that he/she HAS to give you extra credit, it WILL NOT HAPPEN. Remember, the teacher doesn't HAVE to give you extra credit. . . . it's precisely that. . . . EXTRA. If, however, you say that you are concerned about your grade and ASK what you can do to improve it, it is a possibility. I doubt it though. You've waited too long. There isn't much you can do for this year. In the future though, if you are concerned with your grade, you should talk to your teacher with at least a month before the end of the semester. Again, it's attitude. ASK - don't DEMAND (or try to convince). Maybe your teacher will let you "redo" some assignments that you did poorly on for some extra points? Lastly, do not use the excuse "I've worked hard all year" Teachers hear that all the time and it has NO WEIGHT. Have you turned in all of your assignments? How many times have you asked for help during the year? Have you talked to your teacher before now? Have you asked for extra work with areas you are having difficulties in? Teachers are more likely to "go the extra mile" for the students who REALLY put forth the effort.

Ask if you can do a brief 2-3 page paper on a topic of the teacher's choice or out of the New York Times tuesday's science section.

In my district, extra credit is against the rules and teachers cannot accept it. But talk to her. It sure can't hurt!

You may not be able to. Just go and ask her if there is anything you can do to raise your grade. Explain that you would like to get a solid B on your final report card. She may be able to some up with something for you to do.

Is there a School Policy on extra credit? Some teachers do not give ANY extra credit - no matter what. I know I do NOT as it means extra work for ME. If I as a teacher offer extra credit to you, then I HAVE to offer it to all of my other students in order to be fair. That's a LOT of extra work for me as the teacher. Not happening. If you go to your teacher DEMANDING that he/she HAS to give you extra credit, it WILL NOT HAPPEN. I have make-up days EVERY Monday, for one-hour after school, if students want to do make-up assignments they missed during the previous week, I am there. If a student wants extra help, I am there. Extra Credit work, NOPE. All students get graded on the same assignments. "EXTRA CREDIT" work is not fair. AND, my response, to "I deserve a better grade cause I tried hard" Is "I don't give you a grade, I record the grade your work earned you. Work harder next year."
