    I will give this one a shot! Most of the European cathedrals are built to be open and most have high places or towers built that reach into the sky. Religious beliefs have always centered around the church. So it would make sense that they would be the prime focal points during this particular time period. A great deal of the cathedrals keep in mind were great places of art, whether through darker themes with the Gothic period embraces..and there was a constant direct consequence between salvation and damnation. And alot of European monarchs would leave there stamp of beliefs in the archetecture itself. Kind of a way to say, look at me! Basically, the issue is light. The point of the gothics was to shine the light of Christ into the church. In fact, Notre Dame was rebuilt precisely for this reason! It was supposed to have been the "lightest" cathedral in the world, until Chartes was completed. The problem was the flying buttresses needed to support the structure also blocked some of the very light they architects wanted to shine through the stained glass windows. The History Channel just had a very interesting documentary on cathedrals that covered the issue of light very well.
