Romeo and Juliet Act 3 Scene 1?

Does anyone know how to complete my introduction for an A* on my essay about Romeo and Juliet, act 1 scene 3?

  • My essay question is, "How does Shakespeare use dramatic devices in order to make it such an interesting, exciting and important scene?" I've started the introduction as, "A chaotic fight scene full of action, violence and tragedy, the importance of this scene is that it reflects to the whole film, from the rivalry of the households to the love of Romeo and Juliet. A member from both Montague's and Capulet's die caused by anger which leads to more death and rage. Unfortunately, the two lovers have to sacrifice each other because they cannot be together." But I think it needs to be improved aswell, Im having trouble with the whole introduction :( x Please Help

  • Answer:

All good essay introductions should look like an upside-down triangle: start general and get more focused. The last line should be the point you are trying to make. Then each paragraph of the essay should try to prove the point. The last paragraph of your essay should be exactly like the intro, except flipped upside down. So the last paragraph starts with the point you tried to make and then becomes more general. Here's an example of how your intro might go: "William Shakespeare was a master of dramatic devices and used them to drive the excitement and intrigue in his plays. Act 1, Scene 3 of Romeo and Juliet is a prime example of Shakespeare's ability create action, violence and tragedy by pitting two rival families against each other. Without these devices, Shakespeare would be unable to create the atmosphere of intense drama which reaches its climax when two young lovers sacrifice themselves." That wasn't very good, but you see my point. The last sentence needs to state the thing you want to prove in your essay. Your essay will be graded on whether you prove it or not.

Don't mention the film, it has nothing to do with your question. This will lose you marks. Dies** not die. Caused my the age long feud bewteen the two families not anger. The feud creates anger which leads to death and rage. Why are you mentioning the scene where they die if you essay is not on that scene! Get it right >.<

The Nurse sure does like to tell stories. But finally, at some point, Lady Capulet unloads the news and tells Juliet to look for Paris at the party that night. From Shmoop

Forget the flick! Please change your TOPIC sentence, as it MUST tell the reader exactly what your essay will reflect. Always start with the question, assume the reader knows NOTHING, for example: "Shakespeare uses dramatic devices such as, fate, foreshadowing, and metaphors in order to make a scene from "Romeo and Juliet" more interesting, exciting, and important." You must do this, but chose your own devices in this topic sentence, or use mine. Develop from there. NB: You did not yet name any devices in your opening paragraph! Also, you gave us the assignment but, you listed #1 through #5....these questions do not fit into it. Ask the teacher, as you may be confused about the assignment. Best of luck.

Summary of Act 1, Scene 3 • Enter Lady Capulet and Nurse: Lady Capulet wants to have a serious conversation with Juliet, but the Nurse interrupts with a long reminiscence about Juliet's weaning and what Juliet said about falling on her back. Lady Capulet tells Juliet that Paris wants to marry her, and urges her to look him over and see that he is the husband for her. A servant comes to call everyone to the feast. ==================================== Enter Lady Capulet and Nurse: Hurriedly, Lady Capulet says to the Nurse, "Nurse, where's my daughter? call her forth to me" (1.3.1), and the Nurse answers, "Now, by my maidenhead at twelve year old, / I bade her come." (1.3.2-3). She is swearing that she already told Juliet to come. (Another person might swear by her faith or honor, but the Nurse swears by the purity of her maidenhead at the age of twelve, the last time it was intact.) The Nurse calls and calls, then Juliet appears and obediently asks her mother what she wants. Lady Capulet starts to speak, then sends the Nurse away so that she and Juliet can speak in private, but then immediately changes her mind and tells the Nurse to stay. Lady Capulet has a big point to make with Juliet and she apparently believes that the Nurse will support her.
