What advantages of yahoo?

What are the advantages and disadvantages of students using Yahoo Answers to get answers for their homework?

  • Yes it's easier... but the whole point of the assignments are to learn. I find it extra disturbing the number of college level questions on here..... what happens when all these students hit the real world and don't throughly know their fields?!?

    There are advantages to using this, just like using a search engine, but with explanations! For example if you don't understand how to do something, perhaps someone up here knows and can tell you.I've explained how to write papers, letters and do some basic math for example. It's also a good place if you are stuck and cannot find a piece of trivial or obscure information and if you would like someone to edit a piece of your work. However, you must remember that this place is VERY free form and there is NO ONE regulating the answers for accuracy! It's much, much worse that Wikipedia (which is bad enough!). I know there are a lot of people who are tired of seeing kids come up here to cheat and I suspect they are beginning to give them a line of BS for answers -- which I personally find rather amusing since cheaters deserve what they get. Finally, and perhaps the biggest disadvantage, is that it is enabling those same cheaters! I don't think you are going to find a big issue with the college kids ... as they progress in their major fields, they aren't going to find a lot of useful information here. I'm more worried about the younger kids who are learning how easy cheating is! Great question!!!!

Advantage: If you are truly flummoxed you can find an explanation or someone to point you in the right direction. The homework answers where people explain each step so that a student can repeat it on the rest of their homework is what this is here for. Disadvantage: Too many times I see kids asking questions where if they would just open their book they'd find the answer. Even a search engine like ask or google would at least be them doing the research and learning through the effort. Unfortunately, I also see many people just hand them the answers without an explanation or make unkind comments which are not going to help either. I think homework help should be just that, help. It should not be a quick and fast solution so they can get back to their video games and IMs. Thanks to the No Child Gets Left Behind Law a lot of kids are working slightly below their current grade level and are in trouble when they hit college anyway. Just giving the answers to them without making them work for it is not helping to prepare them and is doing a disservice to the educational industry.

Advantages: You might be able to find someone who can explain something to you in a way you can understand it. You can see how different people approach a problem. Disadvantages: Allows you to be lazy, and get others to do all the work for you. Might get wrong answers.

In the real world nobody asks you to compare and contrast the matriarchal symbols in Othello vs. Hamlet. I agree with your premise though, but it's more disturbing to me the middle school-level questions on here. Because in the real world you will have to know how to multiply, tell time, and use proper grammar. Meh, that's modern life. If they didn't get it here they'd get it somewhere else on the internet. If parents don't care enough to monitor their kids' internet usage why should we?
