How to write a personal monologue?

How do you write a monologue?

  • I haven't ever written a monologue before, and I'm supposed to write one about "The Pedantic Penguin" for English class. I'm required to use descriptive and "rich" words. Can you give me some suggestions on how to approach it and write it? Or give me a sample writing?

  • Answer:

A monologue is a speech. Think of it as you talking about "The Pedantic Penguin." You could recap the story and give your opinion or say what you think should be different. or talk about it as a way to show how vocabulary words are used. You can add things to the monologue, too, like other information about penguins or vocabulary, or a related story or joke. It's nice if you end it with a punchline or by making a point. Descriptive and "rich" words give a little more information and color than plain words. For example, in the story when the penguin goes over to the group of parrots, just saying he went over could be enhanced by using descriptive and rich words. How did he go over there? Show people. "He raced," or "he waddled" or even "he strode" - all of these use "rich" verbs that give a picture to the reader or listener. Maybe it could be described some more, with an adverb or a phrase: "He raced over, face alight with eagerness..." Hope this helps.
