What to answer in an interview?

The best answer to interview question "What are your weaknesses"?

  • I always get the question during an interview similar to "What are your weaknesses? What could you improve?" Anyone have a good answer?

  • Answer:

I used to interview people on a regular basis and there's one thing I can tell you about this question: they don't ask it to find out what your weaknesses are, they ask it to find out if you 1) are full of crap and 2) if you are at all self-reflective. So, think about what your weaknesses are. Pick two (everybody has more than two, but you don't want to be completely honest). Preferably, if you've already identified this as a weakness, you will also have addressed it. Explain that. For example, you might say, "I can sometimes become frustrated when I'm having trouble solving a problem or completing a task. One way that I deal with that is to recognize that I am becoming frustrated and to either take a break or work on something else for a bit. I find that usually clears my head and allows me to solve the problem or complete the task more efficiently than if I had allowed myself to become completely frustrated by it."

Other answers

Maybe say things that can still seem a bit complimentary to you, but they do need to be things that are at least somewhat true. You can also temper the statement by saying "sometimes" and "occasionally" to not seem like they are constant weaknesses. Examples might be: I sometimes expect too much of myself and others. I sometimes think my way is the best way.

Find an HONEST weakness (ie perfectionism, patience, etc) and expound on three ways that you are trying to improve!

You have to answer it truthfully. If you tell them you have none you are toast. Identify an area that you believe that you could do better in and tell the interviewer just that. Tell what you have done or plan to do to improve that skill. Most companies don't want cocky know it alls. They want people that know themselves and are not afraid of that knowledge.

If it's true--and ONLY if it's true--being a perfectionist is a weakness employers are usually happy to hear about.
