It was torn down by bulldozers in 1989. ~The Berlin Wall was built because more than 2.6 million East Germans escaped to West Berlin. ~The East German government built it to keep the East Germans where they were. It divided the city Berlin into four regions. ~The wall was made of iron when it was finally done growing. It first started out as barbed wire; in its first stages (August 1961) it was made of concrete elements and square blocks. The second stage of the wall was made of iron and barbed wire (June 1962) there were four total stages of the wall. Once it was at its fourth stage, it was at least 11-12 feet tall. ~Almost all of East Berlin was kept behind the wall; they tried to escape by climbing over, jumping from house roofs to the other side, or digging tunnels. They were kept on the other side by watch towers, signal fences, and different barriers. There were 302 watch towers along the Berlin wall. Five thousand people tried to escape but at least 125 of them were killed. ~In 1964 President Reagan asked the Soviet leader to bring the wall down, but they wouldn’t. They eventually took it down because of riots and protestors. It was taken down with hundreds of bulldozers. ~The Berlin Wall did many things affecting families, friendships’, and other relationships. It affected them by splitting them apart and not letting them see each other. Many people were also cut from their jobs. ~The Berlin Wall was once there, but no longer is. That is one reason it is still important today, only souvenirs are left of it. ~It took the Berlin Wall the entire time it was up to be finished. It started out as barbed wire then ended up made of iron in the end. ~President John F. Kennedy went to Berlin to give a speech on how we could help them. This led to the Berlin Airlift. ~The Berlin Airlift was the time when the US flew planes to East Berlin and brought resources’ that they needed. This was during the time when the Berlin Wall was built, 1961. It took hundreds of planes to bring enough food, water, medicines, clothes, and more. It was not to help the people in East Berlin escape, only to help them. ~The city Berlin is where the Holocaust was planned and where it happened in 1933. ~Berlin was the capital of Germany, but when it got split up into the four regions it was no longer considered a capital. When the Berlin Wall was taken down, it was once again a capital. ~Recently, an entire piece of the Berlin Wall was found. It was about the width of a door but 11 or 12 feet tall. It was found standing where it has been for at least 40-50 years. It was auctioned off on eBay after its discovery. There are still many whole pieces this size found in museums and at national parks.
