How can I finish my homework without getting distracted?

How can I stop getting so distracted while doing homework?

  • I am a high schooler who is in Honors classes, and gets pretty decent grades. However, I find that when I do homework, I get distracted, and end up doing other stuff. I always manage to finish everything, but it takes more time because I get distracted by other things. How can I keep myself focused? What advice would you recommend?

  • Answer:

What always worked for me was playing low music in the background. Personally I prefer something that is mellow enough to keep me from wanting to get up but not going to put me to sleep. I find that it keeps my secondary thoughts to a minimum so I can focus on the task at hand. And when my brain turns to mush (every couple of hours) get up and do something physical for 20 or 30 minutes. Clean house, take a walk etc. That seems to clear out some of the antsy energy so I can concentrate again.

I am pretty much like you...I'm still doing that. 1. Get off Yahoo answers...it can be addicting. 2. Turn off the computer; no AIM, no MSN, no instant messaging, no myspacing, no xanging. Unless, you're typing a report, the only thing you're allowed is some soothing music. 3. No TV! My sister used to watch TV in my room and after listening to it, I would just give up doing my homework and watch along. 4. Limit any phone calls; tell people you'll call them back after you're done. 5. Resist any temptations to play a video game if you play them. 6. Find an environment so boring such as the Library that doing homework is actually interesting! Sometimes I like to study at Starbucks by myself, but the music is kinda of noisy there... 7. Everything else everyone said. After you're done with yoru homework, then do everything else you want to do. My friend was able to focus so at 7 pm she would be watching TV while I was slaving away...

Choose a specific time and a specific place to do your studies. I personally found it easier to get up really early and work. (This also means you have to go to bed really early). No one is awake, the TV is off, etc.

Think before you do.

T Rick

turn off your tv, put away or turn off your cell phone and make yourself study for 45 min, then "break" for 15.

turn off the TV and have some soft classical music playing. (its soothing and it helps me alot) make sure you are in a quiet room and tell people you are doing homework and need them to leave you alone

Everyone encounters distractions, and the first important thing that you are doing, is being aware of your distractions. I suggest that you keep a little note pad and list each distraction that side tracks you. This just identifies them. If any one of them cause a significant distraction, then eliminate it and then see how your work is affected. Note how you could minimize that distraction in your note pad. This becomes your plan of action for future use. In this way you can methodically eliminate those distractions while freeing up time to be put to better use. Later, in a future homework session, you can eliminate the distractions ahead of time or at least use the method you feel could best minimize them. What i feel confident in, is that you are already subconsciously doing this if you are in Honors and with decent grades. The difference once you apply this method, is that you have a work plan of action that you have consciously identified and now you can work your plan anytime you need it.

always keep in your mind that you need to keep and complete the task that you are working on is first and foremost then go to the next task. nothing can be accomplished without solving the main project, then go to the next project. always keep focused.

Close your room. Make sure no noise can be heard. While studying if any thought comes just snap it and concentrate. Take a break after every 20 minutes. Take deep breathing for five/ten minutes and again start studying for 20 minutes. This is how I study. I can not concentrate more than 20 minutes at a time.
