  • 1) A surveyor measuring the tallest tree in a park is 100 ft from the tree. His angle-measuring device is 5 ft above the ground. The angle of elevation to the top of the tree is 48°. How tall is the tree? 2) Twenty minutes after being launched, a hot-air balloon has risen to an altitude of 300 m. The pilot can still see the starting point on the ground at a 25° angle of depression. How many meters is the balloon from the starting point?

  • Answer:

OK.. so lets look at the first one.. First you need to determine the height of the right triangle formed by the surveyor, the tree trunk at the surveyors height and the top. A simple equation where we use the Tangent function (tanx= a/b) where b= 100 so.. Tan48*= a/100 Tan 48= 1.1106... so, if we multiply it by 100 (thank the teacher for an easy number) the height is 111.1 feet.. BUT WAIT.. there's more as the infomercials say... You need to add the height of the surveyor to that since his measurements were done 5 feet above the ground.. so the total is.. 116.1 feet NOW.. since it is not our job to do your homework (grin).. YOU do the second one applying the same general idea. ok..? .
