Who is a freelance artist?

Is it risky to become a freelance artist financially?

I am middle-aged, have two children and am separated. I am currently working at a desk job though I have worked as a patisserie, owned restaurants and bakeries in the past and have an extent knowledge in business. I have a college degree in art. I am really considering becoming a freelance artist (drawing) though I am not sure how I would fare financially. Is there anyone who is a freelance artist or in the same area of work I would greatly appreciate your'e opinion. Thanks in advance
