How to start a non profit organization?

How do I start a non-profit organization or a profitable organization?

  • I want to start an organization for horses. It will involve caring for horses, both surrendered and rescued, and the resale or adoption of said horses, once they are back to health. The people who will be working at this organization will be volunteers and some will be paid by the hour. What kind of business should I file under, non-profit or profit? Where can I get these forms to file? What forms do I need? What are the things I need in order to start a non-profit or profitable business? How do I get the name of the business filed and so on? Do I need a tax identification number? I know all about horses and have been brought up around them. I know how much work they are, and I know how much hard work keeping a business running is, as my parents have a small business. There is a local animal shelter about 12 miles from me, is it possible to join up with them to start a horse part of the organization so I don't have to start a non-profit? What are all the options?

    If you are in the U. S. you need to look to the IRS definitions and qualifications for a non-profit. From your description I doubt seriously that you would fall into the non-profit catagory.

I don't know about tax stuff. I own a business in Ontario Canada. I registered online. They gave me a BIN#, Business Identification Number. Just file your income if you earn money. For raising money for non profit, you could use your own domain name/website. The service will provide you with your own domain name, they host it for you, and you get email addresses as well. If you set up a simpple website, you can put it on your business card. Then you can give your card to people, and leave them wherever you want. People will visit your website to learn more about what you do.
